What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyper means “excessive” and hidrosis means “sweating”. Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating.

Is hyperhidrosis a common condition?

It affects 3% of the world population. It means that 3 out 100 people suffer from hyperhidrosis condition.

What is the cause of hyperhidrosis? 

Cause 1: Primary hyperhidrosis (unknown cause)
This is a more common condition compared to secondary hyperhidrosis and appears, generally on the hands, feet, armpits or a combination of those. It usually starts during childhood or adolescence and persists all your life (LIFELONG). Typically, it is an inherited disorder which means one of your family members may have it too. Types of primary hyperhidrosis are palmar, plantar , facial and axillary.

Cause 2: Secondary hyperhidrosis
Secondary hyperhidrosis (with known cause) may be part of an underlying medical condition such as:
-Hyperthyroidism
-Malignant disease
-Severe psychiatric disorders
-Obesity
-Menopause
-Side effects from other medical treatements

Is hyperhidrosis an inherited disorder?
Typically yes for Primary hyperhidrosis

Is there a chance that you can outgrow hyperhidrosis problem?
It is very unlikely for you to outgrow Primary hyperhidrosis problem. It tends to get worse as you grow older.

What is compensatory sweating?
Compensatory sweating or CS happens when the original sweat signal which is meant for a specific area like palms is redirected to other part of the body like thighs, back of body and etc. This is the result of ETS (Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy Surgery).
